The legal limit

The legal limit for alcohol in the blood is 0.05g per 100ml of blood.

For a person weighing 70kg this equates to

two glasses of wine, or

two tots of hard liquor, or

two cans of beer.

However this is also influenced by your fitness, type of build, having eaten or not, drinking of medicine, menstruation, etc. (5).

Punishment

	The highest fine in South Africa was R37 000 (Nov 03).
	Example: Christmas 1993 an eighteen year old girl from Johannesburg drank two glasses of wine. Returning to home in a rain storm and driving at 60km/h, a tyre burst and she crashed into a house. She tested over the legal limit and her license was taken away for eight years (5).
